Ancient Egyptian religion

1. The Big Picture: Ma’at vs. Chaos

The core of their belief system was a concept called Ma’at.

  • What is it? Ma’at represents truth, balance, order, and justice.
  • Why does it matter? Egyptians believed the universe was constantly at risk of falling back into «chaos» (Isfet).
  • The Goal: The job of every person—and especially the Pharaoh—was to maintain Ma’at to keep the world running smoothly. If they stopped worshipping the gods, the sun might stop rising or the Nile might dry up.

2. The «Who’s Who» of Gods (Polytheism)

Egyptians were polytheistic, meaning they worshipped many gods (over 2,000!). Most were depicted with human bodies and animal heads, representing their powers.

God/GoddessAppearanceRole«Cool» Fact
Ra (or Re)Falcon head with a sun diskGod of the SunBelieved to travel across the sky in a boat during the day and fight a giant snake (Apep) in the underworld at night.

IsisWoman with a throne on her headGoddess of Magic & HealingThe ultimate mother figure; she brought her husband Osiris back to life with magic.
HorusFalcon headGod of the Sky & WarThe protector of the Pharaoh. Egyptians believed the living Pharaoh was Horus on Earth.
AnubisJackal headGod of EmbalmingHe watched over the mummification process and guided souls to the afterlife.
Seth (or Set)Unidentifiable «beast» headGod of Chaos & StormsThe «villain» in many myths who killed his brother Osiris out of jealousy.

3. The Pharaoh: The Bridge Between Worlds

The Pharaoh wasn’t just a king/queen; they were considered a living god (specifically, the living version of Horus).

  • Job Description: Their main religious job was to act as the bridge between the humans and the gods.
  • Offerings: The Pharaoh had to build temples and make offerings to keep the gods happy so they would maintain Ma’at.

4. Death, Mummies, and the Afterlife

This is usually the most interesting part for students. Egyptians were obsessed with the afterlife, which they called the Field of Reeds—a paradise that looked just like Egypt, but with no sickness or death.

The Mummification Process

To get to the afterlife, your body had to be preserved so your soul (the Ka and Ba) could recognize it.

  1. Brain Removal: A hook was used to pull the brain out through the nose (they threw it away because they thought the heart did the thinking).
  2. Organ Removal: The liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines were removed and stored in Canopic Jars.
  3. Drying: The body was covered in a salt called natron for 40 days to dry it out.
  4. Wrapping: Finally, it was wrapped in linen with magical amulets tucked inside for protection.

The Final Test: Weighing of the Heart

After you died, you had to pass a final test in the Hall of Truth.

  • The Judge: Osiris presided over the trial.
  • The Test: Your heart (which contained all your deeds) was weighed on a scale against the Feather of Ma’at (truth).
  • The Outcome:
    • Pass: If your heart was lighter than the feather, you entered the eternal paradise.
    • Fail: If your heart was heavy with sin, it was thrown to Ammit (a monster: part croc, part lion, part hippo) who ate it, and your soul ceased to exist.

5. Magic and Daily Life

  • Amulets: almost everyone wore charms (amulets) for protection. The most famous is the Ankh (symbol of life) and the Eye of Horus (protection and healing).
  • Animal Worship: Animals were sacred. Cats were so honored that killing one, even accidentally, could result in the death penalty.

Summary for your notes:

  • Religion: Polytheistic (many gods).
  • Key Concept: Ma’at (balance/order).
  • Leader: Pharaoh (God-King).
  • Afterlife: Required mummification and a «light heart» (good deeds).
