Steps to Prepare the Class

Class Activity: “Exploring Mesopotamia”

Each group presents for 10 minutes
Topics: Society · Religion · Arts · Sexagesimal System

1. Form Your Group (1 minute)

The teacher will divide the class into groups of 3–4 students.
Each group chooses ONE topic:

Topic Options

  1. Society (social classes: privileged, non-privileged, slaves)
  2. Religion (gods, temples, priests, ziggurats)
  3. Arts (sculpture, reliefs, steles, architecture)
  4. Sexagesimal System (base-60 maths: time, angles, measurements)

2. Research Your Topic (5 minutes)

You have only 5 minutes to research using your textbook, class notes, or assigned pages.

Below are guiding questions for each topic:

1. Society

  • What social groups existed in Mesopotamia?
  • Who belonged to the privileged group?
  • What jobs did non-privileged people do?
  • Why could someone become a slave?

2. Religion

  • What gods did the Mesopotamians worship?
  • What was the role of priests?
  • What was a ziggurat and why was it important?
  • How did religion influence everyday life?

3. Arts

  • What types of sculptures and reliefs did they create?
  • What were steles and what were they used for?
  • What materials did they use?
  • What did Mesopotamian art mainly represent?

4. Sexagesimal System

  • What is the base-60 number system?
  • Why did the Mesopotamians use it?
  • Where do we still use it today (time, angles)?
  • Why was it an important invention?

3. Prepare Your Presentation (3 minutes)

In your group, prepare:

  • 5 key points about your topic
  • 1–2 drawings or images
    • examples: a social pyramid, a ziggurat, a relief sculpture, a base-60 clock, etc.
  • 3 questions to ask the class at the end

Make sure the 5 points are clear and connected to the PDF content.

4. Quick Practice (1 minute)

Rehearse quickly:

  • Decide who speaks first
  • Make sure everyone talks
  • Check that your explanations are short and clear
