A leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of the usual 365. This extra day, February 29, is added to keep our calendar in sync with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

Why Do We Have Leap Years?

The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to complete one orbit around the Sun. Since a standard calendar year has only 365 days, that extra 0.2422 days (almost 6 hours) accumulates over time.
