Activity: “Imaginary Geometric City” (Freehand Drawing)
Activity: “Imaginary Geometric City” (Freehand Drawing)
Objectives
- Practice drawing basic geometric shapes freehand (no ruler or compass).
- Improve hand control and proportion.
- Develop creativity using geometry.
- Understand how complex forms are built from simple shapes.
Steps
1. Warm-up (5–10 min)
Students draw repeatedly:
- Squares
- Triangles
- Circles
- Rectangles
➡️ All freehand, focusing on control and confidence.
This type of exercise improves coordination and spatial awareness in drawing
2. Main task: Build your city (30–40 min)
Students create an imaginary city using only geometric shapes:
- Rectangles → buildings
- Triangles → roofs
- Circles → windows, domes
- Combine shapes to make more complex structures
Encourage overlapping and different sizes.
3. Details & creativity (15–20 min)
- Add roads, windows, doors (using geometry)
- Repeat patterns (grids, sequences)
- Optional: colour code each shape type
Rules
- No ruler, compass, or templates
- Clean, confident lines (avoid over-sketching)
- Focus on effort, not perfection
Extension
Students can create a “futuristic city” or “underwater geometric world” to increase motivation.
